The Mathematics Behind Stock Market Predictions

SubtitleSwapn and Viraaj Talk About Stock Market Math!

Viraaj:
Hey Swapn! My big brother was talking about the stock market and said people use math to guess if prices will go up or down. Is that true?

Swapn:
Yep, it’s true! People use math to try and guess which stocks will go up. It’s not perfect, but math helps a lot.

Viraaj:
But how can math do that? Isn’t the stock market always changing?

Swapn:
Good question! People look at patterns—like if a stock has been going up every day, it might go up again. That’s called a trend.

Viraaj:
Oh! Like if I see the price of ice cream going up every week, I can guess it’ll be higher next week too?

Swapn:
Exactly! We can draw those changes on a graph. If the line on the graph goes up, that means the stock is going up.

Viraaj:
Nice! What if the stock keeps jumping up and down?

Swapn:
That happens a lot. So people use something called a moving average. That just means they take the average price over a few days to see the overall trend.

Viraaj:
Like taking the average of our test marks?

Swapn:
Yes! So if the price was ₹100, ₹110, and ₹120 over three days, the average is ₹110. It shows the general direction.

Viraaj:
What else do they use?

Swapn:
They also use probability, which means guessing the chances. Like saying, “There’s a good chance the price will go up tomorrow.”

Viraaj:
Kind of like guessing if it will rain?

Swapn:
Exactly! It’s not always right, but it helps. People also look at charts to see shapes and patterns that happened before.

Viraaj:
What do the charts look like?

Swapn:
Some look like candlesticks! Not real ones, though. They show the highest, lowest, starting, and ending price of a stock for the day.

Viraaj:
Haha! Candlestick charts sound cool. So all this is called math?

Swapn:
Yes! It uses averages, graphs, numbers, and patterns—all math! Some people even write computer programs to do this fast. Those are called trading bots.

Viraaj:
Whoa! So robots use math to help people buy and sell stocks?

Swapn:
Yes! But people still need to give the bots the right math rules. That’s why learning math is so helpful.

Viraaj:
This is awesome. Can we try making our own chart?

Swapn:
Sure! Let’s track the price of something we like—like your favorite chocolate. We can write the price each week and draw a graph.

Viraaj:
Yes! I’ll bring my notebook tomorrow. We’re going to be kid stock experts!
